Fraud: Suspected Con Artists Masquerading as WiFi Installers Target Families at Bukembe Market
Residents of Bukembe market in Bungoma County have been cautioned to be on high alert after a disturbing incident involving suspected fraudsters posing as WiFi installers unfolded earlier today. According to eyewitness reports, three individuals operating a vehicle with registration number KDP 516R attempted to defraud a family by gaining unauthorised access to their home under the pretence of setting up internet services.
The suspects, all male and dressed in uniforms resembling those of legitimate telecommunications workers, reportedly approached the unsuspecting family, claiming they had been assigned to install WiFi services that had been pre-ordered. They asked for upfront payment, stating it was required to activate the connection. However, their suspicious behaviour raised concerns among the family members.
According to one of the victims, a female occupant of the home began taking photographs of the vehicle and its occupants when she became uneasy with their questions and persistent demands for cash. Upon realising they were being documented, the suspects quickly fled the scene, driving off at high speed toward Kanduyi.
Witnesses say the same vehicle has been spotted in neighbouring trading centres over the past week, with similar reports emerging of fake internet installation offers. The con artists reportedly use technical jargon to confuse their targets and pressure them into making quick mobile money payments before vanishing.
Local leaders and community policing groups have urged residents to remain vigilant and not allow strangers into their homes without verified identification or proper documentation. The Nyumba Kumi initiative, village elders, and boda boda riders have been mobilised to help track the vehicle and alert police to its whereabouts.
Police have since launched investigations and are appealing to members of the public who may have encountered the vehicle or fallen victim to the scam to come forward and file formal complaints. Bukembe OCS confirmed that the number plate, KDP 516R, is now being circulated to all patrol units and surveillance teams.
Community members are also encouraged to verify the identity of service providers through official channels and report any suspicious activity immediately. This incident highlights the growing trend of fraudsters exploiting technology-related services to target homes, particularly in peri-urban and rural areas where digital literacy may be limited.
As authorities intensify their search for the culprits, the public is reminded that vigilance and information sharing are vital tools in combating such criminal activities. Anyone with relevant information can report to the nearest police station or call the DCI hotline.
